We recruit and train volunteers to work as reading partners in local schools, offering one-to-one support to children who would benefit from a little extra help and encouragement. Each reading partner works with three or four children over a school year in weekly half-hour sessions outside the classroom, during which they talk, share books and play games together. We equip our reading partners with a box full of resources, which enables them to tailor their sessions to suit the child’s individual needs as they progress through the year.
Our aim is to:
Improve reading performance
Build up confidence
Foster a life-long love of books
Reading partners offer much more than just reading help; they act as mentors and children really look forward to, and benefit from, this regular, undivided attention and positive encouragement.
